Punch Buggy

When you spot a Volkswagen Beetle, shout "Punch buggy!" (and traditionally deliver a gentle arm punch to a fellow passenger). Some play for points instead of punches; an incorrect call loses a point.

Padiddle

A night-driving game. When a player spots a car with exactly one burnt-out headlight, they call "Padiddle!" for 1 point. A single broken tail light ("little dip") is worth 3. Incorrect calls lose 5.

Yellow Car

First player to spot a yellow vehicle calls it out and scores a point. Some variants award more points for larger yellow vehicles (trucks, buses) and the Australian "Spotto" version adds a playful punch.

License Plate Game (50 States)

Try to spot license plates from all 50 U.S. states (plus D.C.) over the course of the trip. Play cooperatively (everyone helps complete the list) or competitively (first to call a new state gets it). Usually excludes the state you're currently in.

Cows on My Side

Each side of the car counts cows visible on its side ("Cows on my side!"). If the opposing side passes a cemetery, the first to shout "Your cows are buried!" wipes their score to zero. Highest count at the destination wins.

A British game. One player "bats" by watching for pub signs as they pass; each leg on the pub's named subjects scores a run (e.g. "Horse and Groom" = 6). The batter is out if the pub name contains "arms" or "head."

Players race to find each letter of the alphabet, in order (A through Z), on road signs, billboards, or license plates. First to Z wins. Can also be played cooperatively.

Players cooperatively spot vehicles in every color of the rainbow, in order: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple. Some variants require 5 of each color before moving on; advanced versions add brown, black, and white.

Wave enthusiastically at people in other cars. If they wave back, they're "sweet" — tally a point. If they ignore or scowl, they're "sour." Kids tally throughout the trip.
